Limb Neurovascular Status

Checklist
Wash hands, introduce yourself, consent patient.

Upper Limb

  • Colour and temperature
  • Soft/Firm compartments
  • Median
    • Motor – abduct thumb (tests APB)
    • Sensation – radial border of index finger
    • Anterior Interosseous (supracon #) – pincher grip (motor only)
  • Radial
    • Motor – extend fingers  (tests ED)
    • Sensory – dorsal surface of first webbed space
  • Ulnar
    • Motor – finger abduction and adduction (interossei/lumbricals)
    • Sensory – edge of little finger
  • Power grip – grip 2 fingers tightly
  • Pincher grip – index and thumb pinches examiners finger
  • Pulses
    • Radial
    • Ulnar
    • ->Brachial

Lower Limb

  • Colour and temperature
  • Soft/firm compartments
  • Deep Peroneal
    • Motor – dorsiflexion ankle + hallux (TA, EDL, EHL)
    • Sensation – webspace b/w first and second toes
  • Superficial Peroneal
    • Motor – eversion (PL/PB)
    • Sensation – dorsum of foot
  • Tibial
    • Motor – ankle and toe plantarflexion
    • Sensory – heel, plantar aspect of foot
  • Pulses
    • Posterior tibial
    • Distal pedal
    • ->Popliteal and femoral
